Long Sault Graveyard<\/h1>\n

Behind the Long Sault church was a small graveyard with marble stones and a wooden cross. Du Vernet favourably compared the traditional Ojibwe grave houses to these Christian ones: \u201cas the Indians take great care of their graves it is right that the Christians should do the same.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Du Vernet took a picture of the grave of Joseph Wain, a 24-year-old catechist who had drowned in the river in 1894. Jeremiah Johnston wanted to send the photo back to Wain\u2019s family in England. A few years after Du Vernet\u2019s visit, the graves of John and Eliza Crowe and their children were interred. They are still there on the grounds of the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre, and remain well-tended, though the church no longer stands.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
