When Du Vernet met John Cochrane, he was a regularly attendee at Jeremiah Johnston\u2019s church services, as well as a prominent leader and a member of the Midewiwin society. From Du Vernet\u2019s account we know that had three children all of whom were baptized, and we can surmise that the woman making bannock outside their summer home was his wife. According to Archbishop Phair\u2019s detailed account in the Anglican magazine, the Church Missionary Intelligencer, Phair and Jeremiah Johnston baptized Cochrane in 1904, giving him his Christian name. (However, he was already known as John Cochrane in 1898). Phair was very hopeful that when this \u201cman of influence\u201d chose baptism, many other Ojibwe people would follow in his wake.
