Charlie<\/h1>\n

Charlie–also known as \u201cHalf-a-day Charlie\u201d–was Du Vernet\u2019s \u201cIndian canoeman\u201d for his trip on the Rainy River. Working as a canoe guide was a common occupation for Ojibwe men in the 1890s, and missionaries were frequent customers. Charlie received $1.75 for two days of work, which would translate to approximately $50 today.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Du Vernet mentions Charlie\u2019s spiritual practices of \u201cfacing both ways\u201d twice in the diary. On July 14, he writes that Charlie \u201clistened attentively\u201d during Christian prayers and hymn singing at Mr. Wood\u2019s house. Then on July 20, at Long Sault, he records hearing that Charlie was participating in the Ojibwe \u201clong tent,\u201d or what he also called the \u201cmedicine tent.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
