Socialist

Opposed to free market capitalism for the way that it concentrated wealth in the hands of a small minority of owners, socialists struggled for labour rights and for collective ownership of public goods, including railways and hydroelectricity. Despite their celebration of communalism and their critique of greed, socialists in Canada did not develop strong opposition to the ways that the infrastructure of colonialism—including railways and dams—was built on the theft of Indigenous land.
